The Corona-Norco Unified School District was awarded  $150,000 in college scholarships as part of the $1 million dollars in total prizes awarded to large urban school districts that show the greatest academic performance and improvement while reducing achievement gaps among poor and minority students.

Seniors have until March 1 to apply for the scholarship and can do so online at www.scholarshipamerica.org/broadprize/.   Graduating seniors from Broad Prize winning and finalist districts are eligible for two- or four-year scholarships, depending on the type of higher education institution they choose to attend.

This is the second year CNUSD has been a finalist for the prize .  Last year, eight CNUSD seniors were identified as Broad Scholars, and each received a $20,000 scholarship.

The district was recognized for its overall accomplishments with students, however it was noted that the district exceeded in the following areas:

  • Having a greater percentage of Hispanic and African-American students reaching advanced academic levels in comparison with other districts in California
  • Narrowing achievement gaps between Hispanic and white students
  • Outperforming students in other California distrcits with similar demographics

Additionally the district was recognized for it’s student focused approach that focuses on the “whole child” in an effort to improve each student’s educational experience and ultimately provide them with the needed skills for life after high school.  You can read more about CNUSD’s performance along with examples of said achievements on the Broad Prize CNUSD District Profile
