Last night, sheriff’s deputies from the Norco office of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department conducted an overnight DUI checkpoint at the intersection of Hamner Avenue and Alhambra Street. During the check, which ran from 8:00 p.m. yesterday until 3:00 a.m. today, deputies screened over 500 vehicles and made a handful of DUI and related arrests, but more interestingly they uncovered a stolen vehicle from Corona.
During the overnight checkpoint, sheriff’s deputies stopped a driver by the name of Jon Thomas. During his screening Thomas told deputies that he was driving on a suspended license. However he failed to inform deputies that he was also driving a stolen car. As deputies ran a records check of the vehicle, they discovered that the vehicle Thomas was driving was actually reported stolen from Corona on January 22, 2014. A background check on Thomas also uncovered an outstanding felony warrant. By the end of the screening Thomas would be arrested for an outstanding felony warrant, driving on a suspended license, possession of a stolen car, possession of drug paraphernalia, being under the influence of a controlled substance, and driving under the influence of a controlled substance.
The DUI checkpoint, which was was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), resulted in:
- 517 Screened Vehicles
- 4 DUI-Alcohol Suspect Arrests
- 1 DUI-Drug Impaired Suspect Arrests
- 1 Suspect arrested for illegal drugs (possession/transportation/sales)
- 2 Drivers cited/arrested for operating a vehicle unlicensed or while their license was suspended/revoked
- 1 Arrest on other Criminal Charges
- 3 Citations issued
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Norco Office will be conducting another DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at an undisclosed location in an ongoing commitment to lower deaths and injuries on our streets and highways.
